Committee on General Education

The Committee on General Education is composed of seven elected regular faculty members. Each academic school shall be represented on the committee. The committee includes one voting student member selected by the Student Government Association. The Associate Vice President for the Academic Experience (or other administrator designated by the Provost) and the Director of Assessment (or other administrator designated by the Provost) are ex-officio, non-voting members.

The committee’s responsibilities include monitoring and reviewing the General Education Program and initiating or reviewing all General Education Program revision proposals, prior to their consideration by the Faculty Senate. The committee initiates actions, devises procedures, and makes recommendations to the Provost and to the Faculty Senate on any and all aspects of General Education Program administration and program features. Such recommendations can be the modification or termination of courses fulfilling General Education program requirements. The committee consults with the Committee on Assessment of Institutional Effectiveness and the Office for Institutional Effectiveness and Strategic Planning when conducting periodic assessments of the General Education program.

Important Information

Accessing Curriculog

Access to the system is only available to active CofC faculty members. You can reach it through MyCharleston (my.cofc.edu). After logging in, select the Faculty tab and the Curriculog access link will be available in the middle column, along with additional helpful resources. Or you can go directly to the site at cofc.curriculog.com. Please contact CurriculogHelp@cofc.edu if you have trouble logging in, or experience any other technical issues.

Resources for General Education Curriculum Proposals

In order for a course to be listed in the academic catalog as fulfilling a general education requirement, it must be passed by the General Education Committee and the Faculty Senate. In order to be voted on by the last Senate meeting of the year, proposals must make it to the General Education Committee by their final meeting before the last Senate meeting in the spring semester. Proposals begun in the fall semester have a better chance of making it through the Curriculog process to provide time for any questions or edits that might be needed. But the committee will endeavor to act on any proposal that reaches them before the agenda is finalized for the final Senate meeting.
